Waking Up White by Debby Irving

“How was it possible that I was both a ‘good person’ and utterly clueless?”
On the surface, this book doesn’t seem to be about Black history, but it describes my history with Black people and racism. So much in this book shocked and embarrassed me; a sense of visceral truth ran through my body over and over as I read Debby Irving’s revealing story about her white blindness. I also felt the great relief that comes with confession, and my mind was free to really learn from her story. I don’t want to take my freedom for granted any longer and I am trying to live into a new consciousness of loving and dignifying all human beings. Thank goodness that there are many wonderful books for me to read, many gracious teachers, especially those of color, who will show me the way.
