SUMMARY:Gospel of Thomas
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\nThe Gospel of Thomas\nOctober 1 – November 5\, 2024\n3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.\nOn Zoom\nGather together as we explore and listen to the Gospel of Thomas. Each week we will prayerfully listen to one of Jesus’ sayings from this ancient source and take time to reflect upon what rises for each of us. \n  \n  \nSuggested donation: $85 Register here: https://tinyurl.com/GOTonZOOM \nAll of our offerings are supported solely by individual donations. This circle is partially sponsored\, allowing us to offer it at a reduced amount. Please share what you feel led to share\, whether less\, or more to support another. Thank you for being part of a community that doesn’t let finances get in the way.  \nWe are grateful for the generous support of a friend of The Retreat House for partially sponsoring this event. \n  \nMore about the source:  The Gospel of Thomas was one of the manuscripts discovered in 1945 when the Nag Hamadi texts were discovered in Egypt. The Gospel of Thomas today is considered by many to be a rich resource for the deepening of a person’s relationship with God and Yeshua. Listening prayerfully to the sayings offers us an experience of Jesus as a wisdom teacher. The Gospel is different from the canonical Gospels of Matthew\, Mark\, Luke and John as Thomas does not offer any type of narrative about the life of Jesus. Instead it contains one hundred and fourteen sayings of Jesus or Yeshua.  Each saying stands alone and offers a great deal of wisdom into the sayings of Jesus and is an invitation to the student of Thomas to go deeper into what is being said.

SUMMARY:Finding Hope in the Journey of Dementia\, with Dorothy Linthicum
DESCRIPTION:St. Anne’s Parish House Library\nAnnapolis\, Maryland \nThursday\, April 18: 10:30 a.m. – noon\, Tea and Conversation\n  \n  \nWe gratefully offer this conversation in collaboration with St. Anne’s\, Annapolis. Join us with Dorothy Linthicum and explore notions of prevention\, the basics of a diagnosis\, and the hope found in possibilities. Whether you are a family or community member\, a caregiver\, or a pastoral leader\, this topic is universally vulnerable. How can we help one another face the diagnosis of dementia in our families\, among friends\, or in ourselves? \nBrené Brown writes: “Vulnerability is the birthplace of love\, belonging\, joy\, courage\, empathy\, and creativity. It is the source of hope\, empathy\, accountability\, and authenticity.” Let us be reminded of the power of vulnerability\, not to be avoided\, but embraced\, and in embracing taking a first step toward easing our fears. \nWe will explore how the self is never destroyed despite the severity of a disease or condition\, an understanding that comes from many fields\, including psychology\, neurology\, psychiatry\, philosophy\, and spirituality\, among others. Dorothy is co-author\, along with Janice Hicks\, of Redeeming Dementia: Spirituality\, Theology\, and Science. Bring all of your questions\, whether you are family members seeking to learn more\, caretakers exploring practices\, or pastoral leaders meeting community members where they are in their journey. \nPlease register here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/t5usxtz\n\nVisit our website calendar for information on three other locations:\nChestertown\, Maryland – Tuesday\, April 16: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, Lunch and Conversation\, Emmanuel Church\, ($35) \nChestertown\, Maryland – Tuesday\, April 16: 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. (free)\, Tea and Conversation\, Upper Shore Aging: Amy Lynn Ferris Adult Activity Center \nOxford\, Maryland – Wednesday\, April 17: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, Lunch and Conversation\, Church of the Holy Trinity ($35)

DESCRIPTION:Emmanuel Church\nChestertown\, Maryland\nTuesday\, April 16: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\nLunch and Conversation\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nWe gratefully offer this conversation in collaboration with Emmanuel Church\, Chestertown. \nJoin us with Dorothy Linthicum and explore notions of prevention\, the basics of a diagnosis\, and the hope found in possibilities. \nPlease arrive by 11:30 a.m. and enjoy a simple lunch before the presentation and conversation begin at 12 noon.\nRegister here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/7gam2xw

SUMMARY:Women's Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Christmas\nJanuary 6\, 2024\n9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nheld at\nThe Foehliage\, Galena\, Maryland\n  \n  \nGive yourself this special time to refresh your spirit and rest in the company of other women. We’ll sink into this restorative day as a celebration of Celtic Women’s Christmas\, a tradition shared on January 6 at the Feast of Epiphany. Grounded by the work of poet and pastor Jan Richardson\, it is the tradition of honoring the often difficult and tiring work of women to maintain the hearth and home\, especially during the extended holiday season. The women gather to reimagine their lives and\, as friends\, discern emerging patterns and support\, as sisters\, the art of navigating and developing new paths for the new year. The interactive day will be filled with activity\, prayerful silence\, and creativity\, including creating a soul collage. Come enjoy a continental breakfast and a simple\, warm\, and seasonal lunch\, perhaps eaten around a blazing fire and catching a glimpse of an eagle flying.  \nMeg Gallagher and Suzi Foehl have led this retreat since 2020. They joyfully welcome anyone with curiosity\, intention\, and an open heart. The price for the day-long retreat\, including a simple breakfast and lunch is $55 per person. The 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. retreat will be held at the Foehliage in Galena\, MD.   \nAn overnight option is available at a reduced cost of an additional $50. A simple supper is included. The overnight option is $105.  Please register here: https://tinyurl.com/RH2023Women \n  \n“I do not know \nHow to keep it all together \nOr by what patterns this world might  \nFinally\, hold. \n  \n…And what shines \nThrough all this darkness \nShines through us\, \nSetting every shattered thing \nInto a new constellation \n  \nAnd we can turn  \nOur faces \nTo that light\, \nTo the grace of  \nThose stars \nThat turn in us.” \nJan Richardson.  From “Those Stars That Turn in Us\, A Blessing for Women’s Christmas”. sanctuaryofwomen.com. \n

We’ll look at daily practices that can easily weave into each day\, some of which we already engage in without naming them. We will explore the voices of Benedictine writers\, some contemporary and some ancient\, who share our passion for the earth\, healing prayer\, and finding balance and peace in the “other six days.” \nNovember 8 – What Do You Want? — Jesus asks the question\, “What do you want?” What do you want? Let’s gather and listen as community to what we seek in our lives\, our ministries\, and the world. \nNovember 15 – What Does Community Look Like? — We are intergenerational community as we grow each day in our work and ministries at St. Anne’s\,  in Annapolis\, and beyond. Come hear and share stories that hold glimpses of God’s Love in our walk of companionship alongside others.  \nNovember 29 – Soul Friends — Anam Cara is a word used by Celtic Christians to describe soul friendship. SUMMARY:Women's Weekend Retreat - Blessing the Ordinary
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Weekend Retreat \nBlessing the Ordinary\n\n“What is a blessing? A blessing is a circle of light drawn around a person to protect\, heal\, and strengthen. Life is a constant flow of emergence. The beauty of blessing is its belief that it can affect what unfolds.”  \nJohn O’Donohue\, To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings. \n  \n  \nIn the fall\, the rhythm of life picks up pace. We prepare for a new school year and plan for Thanksgiving\, Advent\, Christmas\, and the dawn of a New Year. This retreat is an opportunity to remember that every day is holy and that\, when we pay attention\, we can be blessed by the ordinary of our relationships\, environments\, and work. Blessing is a form of prayer that draws our attention to the people\, places\, and activities that open our hearts\, bring us joy\, and connect us to what often goes unnoticed. We will use scripture and poetry as models for how to receive and give blessings\, a prayer process that can set the tone for the upcoming holy seasons. Activities will include group discussion\, silent time for reflection\, practicing the art form of blessings through writing\, music and movement. Individual rooms are available at $395; limited shared rooms are available at $345.  \nThis event is full at this time. SUMMARY:Being Disciples in this Time
DESCRIPTION:Being Disciples in this Time \na wisdom circle with stories and practices for the journey \nwith Bishop Porter Taylor and Debra Donnelly-Barton \nThree Sundays on Zoom \nApril 23\, 30 and May 7   \n5:00 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. EST \n\nGather with us for a time of learning and growing in conversation\, with spiritual practices to guide our weeks in between. Porter will guide us as we delve into Rowan Williams’ work\, each person bringing their own story. In-between sessions\, we will receive spiritual practice prompts to guide our attention on the journey. \nIn his book Being Disciples\, Rowan Williams asserts\, “discipleship is a state of being. Discipleship is about how we live; not just the decisions we make\, not just the things we believe\, but a state of being.” By that he means disciples ask themselves:  “What is Jesus Christ giving me here and now?” We rethink who we are and why we are here. Moreover\, it means we are called and empowered to live out our Baptismal Promises\, like “To seek and serve all persons\, loving your neighbor as yourself” and what that might look like “with God’s help.” Over the three weeks\, we will cover these topics\, each of which is a chapter in the book: Faith\, Hope and Love; Forgiveness; and\,  Holiness. At the book’s end\, William writes: “What keeps us going as disciples? Self-awareness and stillness\, growth and joy.” The point is about “offering to God our longing to be with Jesus\, wherever he may lead.” The goal here is to rediscover the fundamentals of being a Christian in this place and in this time.  Not only is it important for us to understand these virtues\, but to discover how we can live them out.  \nDiscipleship is also tuning our hearts to the song that God is singing within us right now.  That means practice–like a musician practices scales until they are both a tone memory and a muscle memory–we engage in prayer practices. Debra will offer us two practices per week that correspond to the reading for each week. We will let our learning sink into our hearts and our bodies as we practice what it means to live as a disciple.  \nREGISTER HERE:  https://tinyurl.com/BEINGdisciples. A suggested donation of $75 will be gratefully accepted. Please don’t let finances keep you from attending! For more information\, or\, to request a scholarship\, please email heather@retreathousehillsboro.org Being Disciples: Essentials of the Christian Life\, by Rowan Williams is encouraged for this series and can be purchased here.  \nPORTER TAYLOR is the author of a memoir— Are You Persuaded? In and Out of Being a Bishop. Bishop Taylor joined the Diocese of Virginia as Assisting Bishop after retiring as the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina in 2016. In retirement\, he also served on the faculty of Wake Forest University Divinity School. He holds a Master of Divinity\, a Ph. D. in Theology and Literature\, and a B.A. and M. A. in English. Porter and his wife Jo\, an artist\, are based in Asheville\, NC. \nDEBRA DONNELLY-BARTON is a graduate of the Stillpoint School for Spiritual Direction and the General Seminary in New York. As a practicing spiritual director\, she has an MA in theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University. Debra has studied the Ignatian spiritual exercises as well as engaged in an intensive training in centering prayer with Thomas Keating.
