SUMMARY:Being Disciples in this Time
DESCRIPTION:Being Disciples in this Time \na wisdom circle with stories and practices for the journey \nwith Bishop Porter Taylor and Debra Donnelly-Barton \nThree Sundays on Zoom \nApril 23\, 30 and May 7   \n5:00 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. EST \n\nGather with us for a time of learning and growing in conversation\, with spiritual practices to guide our weeks in between. Porter will guide us as we delve into Rowan Williams’ work\, each person bringing their own story. In-between sessions\, we will receive spiritual practice prompts to guide our attention on the journey. \nIn his book Being Disciples\, Rowan Williams asserts\, “discipleship is a state of being. Discipleship is about how we live; not just the decisions we make\, not just the things we believe\, but a state of being.” By that he means disciples ask themselves:  “What is Jesus Christ giving me here and now?” We rethink who we are and why we are here. Moreover\, it means we are called and empowered to live out our Baptismal Promises\, like “To seek and serve all persons\, loving your neighbor as yourself” and what that might look like “with God’s help.” Over the three weeks\, we will cover these topics\, each of which is a chapter in the book: Faith\, Hope and Love; Forgiveness; and\,  Holiness. At the book’s end\, William writes: “What keeps us going as disciples? Self-awareness and stillness\, growth and joy.” The point is about “offering to God our longing to be with Jesus\, wherever he may lead.” The goal here is to rediscover the fundamentals of being a Christian in this place and in this time.  Not only is it important for us to understand these virtues\, but to discover how we can live them out.  \nDiscipleship is also tuning our hearts to the song that God is singing within us right now.  That means practice–like a musician practices scales until they are both a tone memory and a muscle memory–we engage in prayer practices. Debra will offer us two practices per week that correspond to the reading for each week. We will let our learning sink into our hearts and our bodies as we practice what it means to live as a disciple.  \nREGISTER HERE:  https://tinyurl.com/BEINGdisciples. A suggested donation of $75 will be gratefully accepted. Please don’t let finances keep you from attending! For more information\, or\, to request a scholarship\, please email heather@retreathousehillsboro.org Being Disciples: Essentials of the Christian Life\, by Rowan Williams is encouraged for this series and can be purchased here.  \nPORTER TAYLOR is the author of a memoir— Are You Persuaded? In and Out of Being a Bishop. Bishop Taylor joined the Diocese of Virginia as Assisting Bishop after retiring as the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina in 2016. In retirement\, he also served on the faculty of Wake Forest University Divinity School. He holds a Master of Divinity\, a Ph. D. in Theology and Literature\, and a B.A. and M. A. in English. Porter and his wife Jo\, an artist\, are based in Asheville\, NC. \nDEBRA DONNELLY-BARTON is a graduate of the Stillpoint School for Spiritual Direction and the General Seminary in New York. As a practicing spiritual director\, she has an MA in theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University. Debra has studied the Ignatian spiritual exercises as well as engaged in an intensive training in centering prayer with Thomas Keating.

SUMMARY:A Lenten Journey with Barbara Brown Taylor
DESCRIPTION:stories and spiritual practices for deepening our humanity and broadening  \nour connection with others \nFebruary 28 – March 28\, 2023 \nTuesday Evenings 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  \non Zoom \n  \n  \n“What is saving my life now is the conviction that there is no spiritual treasure to be found apart from the bodily experiences of human life on earth. My life depends on engaging the most ordinary physical activities with the most exquisite attention I can give them. My life depends on ignoring all touted distinctions between the secular and the sacred\, the physical and the spiritual\, the body and the soul. What is saving my life now is becoming more fully human\, trusting that there is no way to God apart from real life in the real world.” \n  \nAcclaimed author and pastor\, Barbara Brown Taylor in An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith\, shares stories about her encounter with God far beyond the walls of the church and how we might discover the Holy in our complex world. Using the book as our reference\, we will invite the author’s work to guide our exploration as we notice the sacred in the small things we do and see\, from simple practices such as walking\, working\, and prayer. Daily chores can become an act of meditation if we pay attention and take the time to notice. Soon we begin to discover altars everywhere we go\, in nearly everything we do. \n  \n\n\n\n\nJoin Mary Carol Tazewell\, Francie Thayer\, Heather Strang\, and friends for this retreat journey as we learn together from the stories and try out new spiritual practices. Order the book in advance (HERE). A Zoom link will be sent before the start of the series. \nREGISTER HERE: https://tinyurl.com/ALentenJourney. This Lenten circle has limited enrollment offering individual participation. The suggested donation for the series is $95; ask about our group rate of $75. Scholarships are available; please contact heather@retreathousehillsboro.org.

SUMMARY:4th Trimester with Mary
DESCRIPTION:A Retreat House Wisdom Circle \nwith Alli Gannett \nWednesdays 6-7pm EST\non Zoom \nMarch 1 – 22\, 2023\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPregnancy and birth are life-changing experiences for the person who physically endures it and those who are supportive loved ones. Bringing forth new life changes the way we see ourselves and our role in our family and community\, and it can stir up a miscellany of emotions\, expectations\, and anticipations. And for those who witness a birth – especially for the first time – it changes you as well.  \nGather with other mothers to explore together this tender time of transformation. We will focus on themes common to one’s postpartum experience: grieving the past\, embracing a new identity\, struggling with societal expectations\, and connecting with the new. And we will be turning to Mary as a companion along this journey. While this course will be organized around postpartum themes\, you do not need to be in a postpartum period or have given birth recently or ever. “Birth” and “postpartum” can be fluid terms – and I invite you to see them as such. Significant change and how we receive it and work with it is the center point of this conversation. \n  \nREGISTER HERE: https://tinyurl.com/4thTrimesterWithMary A suggested donation of $75 will be gratefully accepted. Please don’t let finances keep you from attending! For more information\, please email heather@retreathousehillsboro.org \n  \nABOUT THE RETREAT LEADER: \nAlli Gannett is a creator\, wife\, mother\, hiker\, potter\, runner\, and lover of deep conversations. She is a proud laywoman who has had a lifelong (and at times complicated) relationship with The Episcopal Church. She holds an M.Div. from Yale University\, a certificate in Anglican Studies from Berkeley Divinity School\, and a B.A. in Religion from the University of Pittsburgh. Professionally\, she is the director of communications for the Episcopal Church in Western Oregon. She lives in Portland\, Oregon with her partner\, son\, and two cats.  \n

SUMMARY:Heart Songs - a spoken word gathering
DESCRIPTION:Gather with us at The Foundry in Denton\, Maryland on Friday\, February 24 for Heart Songs – an evening of spoken word poetry that gives voice to what we seek in the world. What are your Heartsongs for our world? All are welcome to bring a found poem or one of your own to share and/or settle into the space to listen. \n“Whatever it is that a person needs or wants\, they understand why that matters\, and that is the unfolding of their Heartsong. When a person offers that – what they need and want most – to others\, that is the next part of their Heartsong… In sharing our Heartsong with others\, it goes out into the world\, and somehow\, circles back to us.” \nMattie J.T. Stepanek \nWe offer this unique gathering in collaboration with Caroline Arts. Enjoy being part of an afternoon of poetry held in a gentle\, friendly\, and inclusive space with reverence for the dignity of each person.  \n

SUMMARY:Conversations With a Hospice Nurse
DESCRIPTION:  \nLife… it’s really amazing\, isn’t it? We are faced with challenges from the moment of birth until our deaths. Some challenges are just part of the natural order\, like learning to walk and talk. Illness and death are also part of that natural order. In between\, we experience joy\, sadness\, love\, freedom\, learning\, friendship\, spirituality\, loss\, and grief. The list goes on. This is where we learn who we are—where we write our story. \nSometimes our challenges are confusing\, and we don’t really know what to do or where to turn. Sometimes it is just nice to have someone to talk to and be able to ask questions and get some answers. \nIt’s funny that\, in general\, people don’t have difficulty talking about their lives and making plans\, yet there is very little discussion about the end of life. It is almost universal—people have great difficulty talking about the end of life\, and it is funny in a sense because it is the one thing that is certain—at some point we will all die. \nThis is almost tragic because fear prevents us from having the conversations that will guide us in making the best decisions that will allow us to live our lives to the fullest. Are you struggling with some questions around your health\, your best living arrangements\, or having certain tests or procedures? Do you have a family member\, friend\, neighbor\, or person in your congregation who is struggling with these questions? \nYou are invited to attend an informal group for conversations about these topics. The Retreat House at Hillsboro offers a quiet\, friendly atmosphere where you can sense the Holy Spirit at work among us. Have a cup of tea or coffee and something sweet to eat\, then join the conversation. We are in a safe space to ask our questions and learn from each other.  \nDot Mayorga\, RN\, a former hospice nurse\, will guide the conversation and answer questions. She has had 10 years of experience working with people with terminal illnesses and their families. She has seen firsthand the difference it makes when those involved are brave enough to have the conversations and\, conversely\, the added burden placed on the group when no planning took place. \nREGISTER HERE:  https://tinyurl.com/hospicenurseconverstions. For more information\, please email heather@retreathousehillsboro.org

SUMMARY:Women's Christmas
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\n\n\n\nThe Feast of the Epiphany is also celebrated as “Women’s Christmas” – a day of rest for women after weeks of preparing for the holidays. SUMMARY:Blue Christmas
DESCRIPTION:While December is filled with delight for many\, it can be a difficult time for some of us\, especially if we’ve said goodbye to beloved hopes\, people in our lives\, or communities we’ve grown close to. Please come and join us for a time of prayer and comfort as we gather to remember. With the lighting of candles\, we will remember those whom we love who are no longer near\, or who have died. We will hold space for naming both struggles and gratitudes through listening and prayer. With the strength and comfort of community\, we will share in opening our hearts to receive the Great Love of the Holy One\, practicing together receiving from God. \nThis service of prayer and praise will be held at St. Paul’s in Hillsboro. We hope you can be with us for remembering\, receiving\, and comfort.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday
DESCRIPTION: \n\nJoin us as we meet the unexpected in the unfolding day.\n\nWe’re looking forward to quiet mornings this fall at The Retreat House – strolling under the statuesque trees\, walking the labyrinth\, and simply being present as we notice nature’s transformation around us. When the air chills\, we’ll light the fire.\n\nThe Sacristy Book Shop will be open. Come\, sip a cup of tea\, and peruse our books. On this day\, we’ll have a table for those drawn to the gentle process of crafting from found objects: October is a wonderful time for gathering leaves for autumn mandala making; November invites sharing gratitude cards\, and\, December is our season for Gathering of the Greens on the Retreat House grounds.\n\nWe’ll close our fall days with a Celtic Prayer Gathering at 12 noon. All are welcome to bring a bag lunch for the close of the day.

SUMMARY:Advent Quiet Morning
DESCRIPTION:    \n with Heather Strang \nWalking through our Story\nThursday  \nDecember 8\, 2022  \n 9:30 am –  \n12:00 pm  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWe will gather for this quiet morning and listen to our story. We will begin with time to connect and sip a cup of coffee or tea before enjoying a reading to frame our morning. Then we’ll each find a space at The Retreat House to listen to our Christmas story. Led by the peaceful voice of our friend The Rev. Dina Widlake\, we will follow her recorded storytelling from scripture in nine separate stations. Either follow amid the mature trees on the grounds\, or find a soft place to land in the house or in St. Paul’s Church. Throughout our pilgrimage of story\, we will have time to ponder questions\, to reflect and to journal.  \n  \nPlease register for this free offering to receive the link for listening to the Christmas story. If you are not able to join us in-person on this day\, listen where you are and any time that works for you.  \n  \nRegister at https://tinyurl.com/QuietAdvent or heather@retreathousehillsboro.org. This gathering will take place inside and outside the Retreat House\, weather permitting. We will practice covid-safe protocols and ask that participants be fully vaccinated; masks are optional.  A suggested donation of $25 per person will be gratefully accepted to support our practice of welcoming all\, not letting finances keep anyone from attending.  \nABOUT THE RETREAT LEADER: Heather Strang is a graduate of the Shalem Institute Spiritual Guidance Program (https://shalem.org)\, a contemplative small group facilitator and member of the Retreat House staff. Heather is active in the healing prayer ministry with St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. She is the parent of two young men and resides with her husband in Annapolis\, Maryland.
