SUMMARY:Being Disciples in this Time
DESCRIPTION:Being Disciples in this Time \na wisdom circle with stories and practices for the journey \nwith Bishop Porter Taylor and Debra Donnelly-Barton \nThree Sundays on Zoom \nApril 23\, 30 and May 7   \n5:00 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. EST \n\nGather with us for a time of learning and growing in conversation\, with spiritual practices to guide our weeks in between. Porter will guide us as we delve into Rowan Williams’ work\, each person bringing their own story. In-between sessions\, we will receive spiritual practice prompts to guide our attention on the journey. \nIn his book Being Disciples\, Rowan Williams asserts\, “discipleship is a state of being. Discipleship is about how we live; not just the decisions we make\, not just the things we believe\, but a state of being.” By that he means disciples ask themselves:  “What is Jesus Christ giving me here and now?” We rethink who we are and why we are here. Moreover\, it means we are called and empowered to live out our Baptismal Promises\, like “To seek and serve all persons\, loving your neighbor as yourself” and what that might look like “with God’s help.” Over the three weeks\, we will cover these topics\, each of which is a chapter in the book: Faith\, Hope and Love; Forgiveness; and\,  Holiness. At the book’s end\, William writes: “What keeps us going as disciples? Self-awareness and stillness\, growth and joy.” The point is about “offering to God our longing to be with Jesus\, wherever he may lead.” The goal here is to rediscover the fundamentals of being a Christian in this place and in this time.  Not only is it important for us to understand these virtues\, but to discover how we can live them out.  \nDiscipleship is also tuning our hearts to the song that God is singing within us right now.  That means practice–like a musician practices scales until they are both a tone memory and a muscle memory–we engage in prayer practices. Debra will offer us two practices per week that correspond to the reading for each week. We will let our learning sink into our hearts and our bodies as we practice what it means to live as a disciple.  \nREGISTER HERE:  https://tinyurl.com/BEINGdisciples. A suggested donation of $75 will be gratefully accepted. Please don’t let finances keep you from attending! For more information\, or\, to request a scholarship\, please email heather@retreathousehillsboro.org Being Disciples: Essentials of the Christian Life\, by Rowan Williams is encouraged for this series and can be purchased here.  \nPORTER TAYLOR is the author of a memoir— Are You Persuaded? In and Out of Being a Bishop. Bishop Taylor joined the Diocese of Virginia as Assisting Bishop after retiring as the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina in 2016. In retirement\, he also served on the faculty of Wake Forest University Divinity School. He holds a Master of Divinity\, a Ph. D. in Theology and Literature\, and a B.A. and M. A. in English. Porter and his wife Jo\, an artist\, are based in Asheville\, NC. \nDEBRA DONNELLY-BARTON is a graduate of the Stillpoint School for Spiritual Direction and the General Seminary in New York. As a practicing spiritual director\, she has an MA in theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University. Debra has studied the Ignatian spiritual exercises as well as engaged in an intensive training in centering prayer with Thomas Keating.

SUMMARY:4th Trimester with Mary
DESCRIPTION:A Retreat House Wisdom Circle \nwith Alli Gannett \nWednesdays 6-7pm EST\non Zoom \nMarch 1 – 22\, 2023\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPregnancy and birth are life-changing experiences for the person who physically endures it and those who are supportive loved ones. Bringing forth new life changes the way we see ourselves and our role in our family and community\, and it can stir up a miscellany of emotions\, expectations\, and anticipations. And for those who witness a birth – especially for the first time – it changes you as well.  \nGather with other mothers to explore together this tender time of transformation. We will focus on themes common to one’s postpartum experience: grieving the past\, embracing a new identity\, struggling with societal expectations\, and connecting with the new. And we will be turning to Mary as a companion along this journey. While this course will be organized around postpartum themes\, you do not need to be in a postpartum period or have given birth recently or ever. “Birth” and “postpartum” can be fluid terms – and I invite you to see them as such. Significant change and how we receive it and work with it is the center point of this conversation. \n  \nREGISTER HERE: https://tinyurl.com/4thTrimesterWithMary A suggested donation of $75 will be gratefully accepted. Please don’t let finances keep you from attending! For more information\, please email heather@retreathousehillsboro.org \n  \nABOUT THE RETREAT LEADER: \nAlli Gannett is a creator\, wife\, mother\, hiker\, potter\, runner\, and lover of deep conversations. She is a proud laywoman who has had a lifelong (and at times complicated) relationship with The Episcopal Church. She holds an M.Div. from Yale University\, a certificate in Anglican Studies from Berkeley Divinity School\, and a B.A. in Religion from the University of Pittsburgh. Professionally\, she is the director of communications for the Episcopal Church in Western Oregon. She lives in Portland\, Oregon with her partner\, son\, and two cats.  \n

SUMMARY:Seeing the Word: Women of the Bible
DESCRIPTION:Mondays\, March 1-22 at 6:30-7:30 pm\, via Zoom \nSeeing the Word: Women of the Bible is a contemplative prayer practice using illuminations from the St John’s Bible. These images bring to life passages from Scripture\, helping us to engage with the Word\, encounter the Divine\, and enact the Message in our daily lives. As we journey through this Lenten season\, we’ll explore often overlooked women of the Bible. Their faith\, hope\, courage and love are highlighted in the St John’s Bible. As we contemplate their stories in the scripture and illuminations\, we begin to see where they journey with us and how our journey is paved by them. \nWe gather each week to share our journeys through guided reflections. The illuminations from the Saint John’s Bible draw us further into contemplative prayer. As we open “the eyes of our heart” (visio divina) and “the ears of our heart” (lectio divina)\, we discover what the Word means to us and what the Holy Spirit is calling us to do in the world today. The Saint John’s Bible is the first of its kind in 500 years. Commissioned by the Benedictine monks at St. John’s Abbey\, as a tribute to the new millennium\, this handwritten NRSV Bible has over 160 illuminations to bring the Word of God to life today. By praying with the illuminations\, we may search deeper into the meaning for our lives. \n\nRegister online at https://tinyurl.com/RHWCWomen by Friday\, February 26.\n  \n\nHEATHER HALL is graduate of Hesychia School of Spiritual Direction\, an ecumenical and multi-faith program. SUMMARY:Being Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Mondays\, February 22 – March 8 at 7:30-9:00pm\, via Zoom \nWith a deep breath I ask: in our noisy world\, where is sanctuary? Our circle will offer the refreshment of listening and reflection inspired by the voices of Brother Lawrence\, a 17c. cook and Carmelite lay brother\, Macrina Wiederkehr\, beloved poet and monastic\, and Howard Thurman\, philosopher and theologian. \nThe suggested donation is $75 per person\, but please don’t let finances keep you from attending. SUMMARY:Wisdom Circle - Seeing the Word: Illuminating Advent
DESCRIPTION:Mondays\, November 30th-December 21st at 6:30-7:30PM via Zoom. \nSeeing the Word: Illuminating Advent is a contemplative prayer practice using illuminations from the St John’s Bible. These images bring to life passages from Scripture\, helping us to engage with the Word\, encounter the Divine\, and enact the Message in our daily lives. \nAdvent honors the time of waiting for the arrival of the Christ child. We gather each week in hope\, peace\, joy and love to meet the Messiah who is – and is yet to come – through guided reflections. The illuminations from the Saint John’s Bible\, which reflect scripture readings for the season\, draw us further into contemplative prayer. As we open “the eyes of our heart” (visio divina) and “the ears of our heart” (lectio divina)\, we discover what the Word means to us and what the Holy Spirit is calling us to do in the world today. \nThe Saint John’s Bible is the first of its kind in 500 years. \n\n\n\n\nRegister online at tinyurl.com/RHWCAdvent by Monday\, November 23rd. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHEATHER HALL is graduate of Hesychia School of Spiritual Direction\, an ecumenical and multi-faith program. She is a lifelong learner and seeker who graduated from Education for Ministry and JustFaith. While living in Anchorage\, Alaska\, Heather was active with St Mary’s Episcopal Church\, where she led Adult Education – developing and facilitating classes\, workshops and retreats – and Outreach programs. Born and raised in Maryland\, where she taught college and started her career in environmental science\, Heather recently returned to the Shore to establish her encore career as a life coach\, spiritual director and storyteller through arts & crafts. SUMMARY:Wisdom Circle: Prayerful Listening for Spiritual Guidance
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION CLOSED\nWISDOM CIRCLE: Prayerful Listening for Spiritual Guidance\nWednesdays\, September 16\, 23\, 30 and October 7\, 2020\n7:00 – 8:30 p.m.\n“… the Spirit of Truth is at work in the depths of our hearts –\nhelping\, searching\, knowing\, and interceding.\n[Prayerful listening] is an invitation to bend a prayerful\, listening ear\ntoward that Spirit who is with us always.”\n– L.A. Lindbloom\, “Prayerful Listening: Cultivating Discernment in Community” \n  \nA Wisdom Circle is a group of 8-12 people who gather to learn\, tell stories\, listen and pray about a particular subject. Within the circle\, we practice a way of being that connects us in spirit while drawing us within for a deeper experience. \n  \n“… the Spirit of Truth is at work in the depths of our hearts – helping\, searching\, knowing\, and interceding. [Prayerful listening] is an invitation to bend a prayerful\, listening ear toward that Spirit who is with us always.” – L.A. Lindbloom\, “Prayerful Listening: Cultivating Discernment in Community” \n  \nThe practice of spiritual guidance has many names: spiritual direction\, prayerful listening\, sacred listening\, or spiritual companionship. In this Wisdom Circle we will learn how to seek and accept spiritual guidance by combining silence\, prayerful listening and open-hearted response. \nIn social conversation\, the usual pattern is a give-and-take of ideas and perspectives. In a prayerful listening group\, there is an ebb and flow of words and silence. It is within the silence that the Holy Spirit whispers\, inspiring us to respond for the sake of the one who has spoken. \nDuring our sessions\, we will practice the three essential parts of prayerful listening that take place when a group gathers for spiritual guidance: \n\nPray silently\, and listen for how God speaks to us.\nListen attentively as others seek discernment for a specific situation.\nPray on behalf of another and respond prayerfully to that person.\n\nIn the last session we will bring together all three practices for the full experience of a prayerful listening group. We ask that you attend all four sessions. Come on your own\, bring a partner\, or join with a few friends. People of all faith traditions and spiritual experiences are welcome. \nAt the end of this program participants will have an opportunity to join a spiritual guidance group or to arrange for individual spiritual guidance from one of the Retreat House spiritual directors.* \nREGISTER ONLINE at https://bit.ly/rhlistenreg \, or by email to info@retreathousehillsboro.org. Once you register for the series of four sessions\, you will receive the Zoom link. Payments can be made with online registration or by check mailed to the address below. As always\, everyone is welcome to attend\, regardless of finances. \n  \nAbout the Wisdom Circle leader: Linda Mastro will lead the main session of The Wisdom Circle\, with smaller breakout groups facilitated by the spiritual directors* of The Retreat House. Linda is a spiritual pilgrim\, life coach and spiritual director trained through the Bon Secours Retreat and Conference Center in Marriottsville\, Maryland. Learn more about Linda and her practice at livingpilgrimage.com. \n*A list of Retreat House spiritual directors can be found at retreathousehillsboro.org/meditation-and-reflection/

SUMMARY:Wisdom Circles: Tending the Holy in the Fallow Season
DESCRIPTION:Wisdom Circles\nOur ancestors gathered in circles around the fire to tell stories\,\nsolve problems\, seek the common good and celebrate the joys of life. \n \n  \nWinter Wisdom: Tending the Holy in a Fallow Season\n5 Wednesdays  6:00 – 7:30 p.m.\nJanuary 29 – February 26\, 2020\nThe Stam House\n114 Washington Ave.\, Chestertown MD 21620\n \n  \nWinter is the season where all around us fields lay fallow. The spiritual life does well to emulate nature’s wisdom. We need stillness. We need rest. There is a time for going deeper that has nothing to do with productivity. We have been trained to ignore the rhythms of nature\, to stay busy and efficient at all times. So it will take a new kind of attentiveness to sink into our own fallow season. \nOur Wisdom Circle will explore ways to attend to the holy within each of us through guided meditation and contemplative practice. Each session will focus on a particular topic\, learn practices to use in the week ahead and spend some time together in quiet. \nWinter’s stillness and quiet will support our quiet practices. We’ll learn waiting with the fields as we allow ourselves to rest in the Spirit of the season. \n$75.00 per person – Pre-registration is required. Please register by Wednesday\, January 22.\nOnline: http://bit.ly/wisdomcirc2                                Email:  info@retreathousehillsboro.org\nMail: The Retreat House\, P. O. Box 3\, Hillsboro MD 21641 – please indicate “Chestertown” \n  \nDebra Donnelly-Barton is a graduate of The Stillpoint School for Spiritual Direction and the General Theological Seminary in New York. She has an MA in theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University. Debra has studied the Ignatian spiritual exercises as well as an intensive training in centering prayer with Thomas Keating. \n

SUMMARY:Wisdom Circles: Cultivating Peace in Small Community
DESCRIPTION:Wisdom Circles\nOur ancestors gathered in circles around the fire to tell stories\,\nsolve problems\, seek the common good and celebrate the joys of life. \n \n  \nCultivating Peace in Small Community\n5 Thursdays  6:30 – 8:00 p.m.\nJanuary 23 – February 20\, 2020\nSt. Anne’s Church Parish Hall\n199 Duke of Gloucester St.\, Annapolis MD 21401\n \n  \n  \n\n“The measure of our compassion lies not in our service of those on the margins\nbut only in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them.”\n~Fr. Greg Boyle\, founder of Homeboy Industries\, Los Angeles \n\nIn our world\, it can be hard to find the space and time to connect and reflect with others. In this weekly gathering\, we will explore the age-old spiritual practice of small-group discussion about the cultivation of peace and kinship in the world. We call it a ‘wisdom circle’ because it’s only together that we can discover our greatest wisdom\, expand our awareness and embrace the needs of our world and community around us. \nEach week\, we will read and reflect on spiritual writings including: Watchman Nee\, Proverbs\, Thich Naht Hahn\, Gordon Cosby\, Jesus\, Julian of Norwich\, various poets\, and David Steindl-Rast and take away a daily gratitude practice to explore in the week to come. We will share a bowl of soup at the start of our gathering. \n$75.00 per person – Pre-registration is required. Please register by Thursday\, January 16.\nOnline: http://bit.ly/wisdomcirc2                                Email:  info@retreathousehillsboro.org\nMail: The Retreat House\, P. O.
