SUMMARY:Unearthing the Gifts of Autumn: A Women's Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nUnearthing the Gifts of Autumn: A Women’s Weekend Retreat\nFriday\, October 24 – Sunday\, October 26\, 2025\nHosted by the Retreat House at the Foehliage Retreat Center in Galena\, Maryland\nFacilitated by Linda Mastro\n“For where your treasure is\, there your heart will be also.” ~ Matthew 6:21 \n  \nAutumn is a season of transformation. Trees display a kaleidoscope of color before releasing their spent leaves to nourish the earth. Gardens give up their harvest and the soil rests until planting season comes again. Nature mirrors how we can honor what is awe-inspiring in our lives and how to let go of what has run its course. \nIn this weekend we will explore how autumn can show us how to honor our gifts and cultivate new perspectives. Retreat activities will be shaped by prayerful listening in community and silent personal reflection\, accompanied by music\, movement\, and creative play. Guests will experience the hospitality of the Foehliage Retreat Center\, which offers comfortable lodging\, home-prepared meals\, and the freedom to explore the ground of this riverfront treasure. The retreat begins with dinner on Friday evening and ends with a prayer service and brunch on Sunday. \nThe cost of the retreat includes five nutritious meals\, lodging\, and all materials.  \nSingle rooms: $395 Shared room: $345 \nRegister here: \nhttps://tinyurl.com/RHfall2025 \n

SUMMARY:Being the Beloved: A Winter Weekend Women’s Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Being the Beloved: A Winter Weekend Women’s Retreat\nFriday\, February 21  –  Sunday\, February 23\, 2025\nHosted by The Retreat House\nAt the Foehliage Retreat Center in Galena\, MD\nGuided by Linda Mastro\n  \nJesus said\, “Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.  \nThis is the most important\, the first on the list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s law and the Prophets hangs from them.”  \nMatthew 22:34-40 (The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language) \n  \nPraying with the greatest commandments\, we often focus on the love of God and neighbor. Despite our best intentions\, we can easily overlook that Jesus included us in this equation of love. Loving ourselves requires that we remember that we are the beloved children of God. We may have been programmed to judge ourselves harshly and to downplay our worth. These standards\, designed to keep us humble\, also undermine accepting our divine goodness. How on earth can we truly extend love to others if we do not stand on a firm foundation of love for ourselves? \nIn his classic book\, Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World\, Henri Nouwen\, Catholic priest\, professor\, psychologist\, and prolific writer\, says\, “As long as ‘being the Beloved’ is little more than a beautiful thought or a lofty idea that hangs above my life to keep me from becoming depressed\, nothing really changes. What is required is to become the Beloved in the commonplaces of my daily existence\, and bit by bit to close the gap that exists between what I know myself to be and the countless realities of everyday life. Becoming the Beloved is pulling the truth revealed to me from above down into the ordinariness of what I am thinking of\, talking about\, and doing from hour to hour.” \nIn this retreat\, we will explore what it means to embrace our Belovedness. Together we will reconsider self-care as an act of love that can transform our relationships in all domains of life. The retreat will include time for silent rest and reflection\, heart-enriching conversation\, and mindful prayer and movement. You will take home practices that will inspire you to live each day more fully into your one\, precious life. \nThe retreat begins with dinner on Friday evening and ends with a prayer service and brunch on Sunday. The cost of the retreat includes five nutritious meals\, lodging\, and all materials. \n  \nRegister here: https://tinyurl.com/WINTERBELOVED \n

SUMMARY:Women's Weekend Retreat - Blessing the Ordinary
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Weekend Retreat \nBlessing the Ordinary\n\n“What is a blessing? A blessing is a circle of light drawn around a person to protect\, heal\, and strengthen. Life is a constant flow of emergence. The beauty of blessing is its belief that it can affect what unfolds.”  \nJohn O’Donohue\, To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings. \n  \n  \nIn the fall\, the rhythm of life picks up pace. We prepare for a new school year and plan for Thanksgiving\, Advent\, Christmas\, and the dawn of a New Year. This retreat is an opportunity to remember that every day is holy and that\, when we pay attention\, we can be blessed by the ordinary of our relationships\, environments\, and work. Blessing is a form of prayer that draws our attention to the people\, places\, and activities that open our hearts\, bring us joy\, and connect us to what often goes unnoticed. We will use scripture and poetry as models for how to receive and give blessings\, a prayer process that can set the tone for the upcoming holy seasons. Activities will include group discussion\, silent time for reflection\, practicing the art form of blessings through writing\, music and movement. Individual rooms are available at $395; limited shared rooms are available at $345.  \nThis event is full at this time. SUMMARY:Re-imagining Prayer: A Women’s Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“These are some of the things that prayer is. Prayer is rhythm. Prayer is comfort. Prayer is disappointment. Prayer is words and shape and art around desperation\, and delight and disappointment and desire. Prayer can be the art that helps you name your desire.”  ~ Padraig O Tuama   \n  \nDuring this weekend retreat\, we will experience prayer practices that invite us to re-imagine our relationship with God\, ourselves\, and the people in our lives. The comfort and hospitality of the Foehliage will provide an environment for deep listening and heartfelt response. We will have opportunities for conversation\, silence\, movement\, and contemplation. Together we will explore many forms of prayer\, including movement\,  journaling\, Lectio Divina\, walking meditation\, and other experiences that bring our bodies\, minds\, and spirits into the act of authentic prayer.    \n  \nWe will gather at The Foehliage Retreat Center in Galena\, Maryland\, on Friday afternoon. Dinner will be at 6:00 pm\, followed by a brief gathering to set the tone for the weekend. Friday evening and parts of Saturday will flow in and out of silence\, with plenty of time for journaling\, walking on the beautiful grounds\, quiet reflection\, and conversation. Indeed\, come spend open-hearted time noticing just how near God is. \nOur invitation this weekend is to step out of the world’s stories and notice God’s stories\nthat enfold us each day—in the ground beneath our feet\, the canopy of limbs over our\nhead\, the chair offered to us\, the unspoken kindness of the person serving us tea.\nSometimes being in silence can remind us of a sacredness of life that we don’t fully see\nwith the sound turned up. Like other silent retreats\, we will begin by sharing dinner and\nconversation. Our retreat leader will offer inspiration and guidance before we go off to\nbed\, beginning our silent weekend in community. Saturday will be a day of silence and\nrest—no organized programming\, just space and time to be and let be. As we gather for\nbrunch on Sunday\, we will once again share conversation and any gifts that may have\nrisen during the weekend. Come\, and for a time\, turn down the sound of the world. Bring\na friend! This retreat invites both men and women. \nREGISTER AT – https://tinyurl.com/RHdec3-5\, or by contacting us at info@retreathousehillsboro.org. This gathering will take place at The Foehliage Retreat Center\, in Galena\, Maryland. Read (here) about the Covid-safe protocols for this retreat. The cost for this retreat is $299 and includes lodging and meals. \n\nFRANCIE THAYER is the Director of the Retreat House at Hillsboro and received her training in spiritual guidance at The Shalem Institute in Washington DC. A life-long Episcopalian\, she received a Masters Degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2014. She lives in Galena\, MD with her husband where their three adult children love to visit.

SUMMARY:A Weekend Retreat with Steve Garnaas-Holmes
DESCRIPTION:Writing as a Spiritual Discipline \nFriday\, November 19th – Sunday\, November 21th \nAt The Foehliage Retreat Center in Galena\, Maryland \n  \nThe Foehliage is pleased to offer this in-person weekend retreat with Steve Garnaas-Holmes whose transformative prayer and poetry infuses his readers with gentle inspiration. Steve’s site Unfolding Light shares daily reflections with individuals and communities near and far. A grace-filled weekend of listening\, exploring\, quiet\, and beauty awaits at The Foehliage on the shore of the Sassafras River in Galena\, Maryland\, approximately 50 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. \nJoin Steve as he guides us this weekend – “Writing can be a spiritual discipline\, if we let go of trying to write something “good” (especially when we label it “poetry!”). I often say poetry is 90% paying attention and 10% taking really good notes. Writing as a spiritual discipline is about the paying attention part. It’s not really about writing; it’s a form of prayer; it’s praying with a pencil. No one needs to hear it except ourselves. But sometimes we don’t even hear ourselves until we say it\, or write it. In this retreat we’ll experience several different modes of writing as forms of listening\, including journaling\, poetry\, “found prayers\,” and biblical fan fiction.” \nThe Foehliage offers this retreat with limited attendance providing spaciousness for Covid-safe practices\, mindfulness toward social distancing\, and generous opportunities for being outside\, weather permitting. The cost of the retreat is $325 and includes accommodations and all meals. Ample private rooms are available. \nNote on Covid protocols: The Foehliage Retreat Center asks that all guests be fully vaccinated; mask wearing on-site is optional. Exceptional hospitality is the objective of the Foehliage. The health and safety of all guests is at the center of that intention. In these unprecedented times\, we encourage all to consider their health and the wellbeing of others by participating without any signs of illness. We will happily refund a good faith registration fee to anyone who becomes ill and decides not to attend the retreat so as not to be a risk to others. \nThis event has filled quickly. We encourage you to join the waiting list below in the event of cancellations. For more information\, please contact heather@retreathousehillsboro.org or to join the waitlist click here. \n\nMORE ABOUT STEVE GARNAAS-HOLMES – “I’m a retired United Methodist pastor. My wife Beth and I live in Maine. We have three grown sons whom I love dearly. I served churches for 40 years in Montana and New England. I’ve also lived in South Dakota\, California\, Washington and Minnesota. I often lead retreats on prayer\, poetry and renewing our language about God. I used to write and perform with the Montana Logging & Ballet Company\, a quartet that did music and comedy around the country\, but people laughed us off the stage so after 37 years we quit. I write a lot of church music. I am trying to be here now.”
