SUMMARY:Receive a Word
DESCRIPTION:Receive a Word\n  \nFour Monday Evenings\nJanuary 12 – February 2\, 2026\n6:30 – 7:45 p.m.ET\non Zoom\n\n\n  \n  \n  \nGuided by Heather Hall\, we will explore an alternative to “New Year’s Resolutions.” The modern practice of selecting a “Word of the Year” is based on the ancient wisdom of Desert Ammas and Abbas from early Christianity. The Ammas and Abbas\, however\, had cultivated a practice of Divine Listening and their wisdom sayings were meant to be pondered for weeks\, months or years. \nIn her latest book – Give Me a Word: The Promise of an Ancient Practice to Guide Your Year – Christine Valters Paintner offers us guidance on slowing down and tuning in to what the Divine is offering you. \nAs you release the many pressures that surround you— from both within yourself and outside yourself— you’ll learn to listen for what shimmers and stirs within. As you receive your unique message\, you’ll discover the invitation. Then you’ll explore the word and ways to carry it as you journey through the year ahead. \nThough not required\, it’s recommended that you get a copy of Christine Valters Painter’s Give Me a Word. You can purchase it through your favorite bookseller or online at The Retreat House’s Bookshop\, here: Give Me a Word a book by Christine Valters Paintner – Bookshop.org US \nYour leader for this journey is Heather Hall\, who received her first word early in her career and has continued to listen for Divine wisdom. \nParticipation fee: $75 \nRegister:  HERE\n

SUMMARY:Women's Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Christmas\nJanuary 3\, 2025\n9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nheld at\nThe Foehliage\, Galena\, Maryland\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n “Thus says the Lord: Stand at the crossroads\, and look\, and ask for the ancient paths\, where the good way lies; and walk in it\, and find rest for your souls.”  – Jeremiah  6:16 \nThe celebration of Celtic Women’s Christmas is an invitation to rest. Give yourself this special time to refresh your spirit and restore in the company of other women. We’ll sink into the day as a celebration of Celtic Women’s Christmas\, an ancient and time-honored tradition of Celtic spirituality shared at the Feast of Epiphany. Gather with us and share in the tradition of a day set aside for women to gather\, to be in community with each other\, and to rest and refill after a busy holiday season. \nJoin us on Saturday January 3\, 2026 for this time of rest in the Divine God. Through poetry\, blessings\,  time outdoors (weather permitting) and quiet reflection we will refresh our spirits with inspiration from Jeremiah 6:16 as we look to the ‘ancient paths’ to better learn why the celebration was created and continues to this day. It will be a day for communing in nature\, personal discovery\, group interaction\, rest\, and renewal for those gathered.  \nWe will enjoy a light breakfast\, a wholesome lunch\, and the opportunity to enjoy the riverside beauty in our midst and immerse ourselves in nature. \n  \nRegister:  HERE

Wild Mercy is essential reading for anyone ready to learn more\, to awaken the feminine mystic within\, and birth her loving and creative essence into the world. The author’s voice has been known to be both humorous and down-to-earth. As part of our journey with the author\, we will delve into the at-home spiritual practice of reflective journaling. And we are activating a paradigm shift such as the world has never seen.”\n \nWith Wild Mercy\, Mirabai shares the subversive wisdom and fierce compassion of the feminine mystic across cultural boundaries and throughout history. From saints and sages\, to goddesses and archetypal energies\, to contemporary teachers and seekers—you’ll meet women who blazed a path that will illuminate your own.\n \nEach chapter explores a different facet of feminine mysticism through a tapestry of teachings\, reflections\, and stories\, along with a practice for integrating the chapter’s themes into your own life. As you journey through these pages\, you’ll explore:\n \n\nTaking refuge in contemplative practice with St. Teresa of Avila and the Shekinah\nLonging\, embodiment\, and union as the heart of feminine spiritual practice with the Hindu poet Mirabai and Mary Magdalene\nYour relationship with the Earth\, motherhood in all its forms\, and a loving call to action alongside Gaia and Ix Chel\nCommunity and the web of life with Indra\, the Beguines\, and female prophets throughout history\nWild\, playful\, and compassionate mercy with Tara and Kuan Yin\nFinding joy in creativity and the arts with Saraswati and Chiyo-ni\nMore inspiration from archetypal goddesses and amazing women past and present—Julian of Norwich\, the Sufi saint Rabia\, Pachamama\, Sophia\, Old Spider Woman\,      Hildegard of Bingen\, Demeter\, Kali\, and more.\n\n \nWild Mercy provides a much-needed alternative to the models of religion and spirituality that have dominated history\, an alternative suited for both men and for women. Here\, Mirabai invites you to welcome the wisdom of women back into the collective field where it may transform the human family\, heal the ravaged Earth\, and awaken the divine love in our hearts. \n

SUMMARY:Unearthing the Gifts of Autumn: A Women's Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nUnearthing the Gifts of Autumn: A Women’s Weekend Retreat\nFriday\, October 24 – Sunday\, October 26\, 2025\nHosted by the Retreat House at the Foehliage Retreat Center in Galena\, Maryland\nFacilitated by Linda Mastro\n“For where your treasure is\, there your heart will be also.” ~ Matthew 6:21 \n  \nAutumn is a season of transformation. Trees display a kaleidoscope of color before releasing their spent leaves to nourish the earth. Gardens give up their harvest and the soil rests until planting season comes again. Nature mirrors how we can honor what is awe-inspiring in our lives and how to let go of what has run its course. \nIn this weekend we will explore how autumn can show us how to honor our gifts and cultivate new perspectives. Retreat activities will be shaped by prayerful listening in community and silent personal reflection\, accompanied by music\, movement\, and creative play. Guests will experience the hospitality of the Foehliage Retreat Center\, which offers comfortable lodging\, home-prepared meals\, and the freedom to explore the ground of this riverfront treasure. The retreat begins with dinner on Friday evening and ends with a prayer service and brunch on Sunday. \nThe cost of the retreat includes five nutritious meals\, lodging\, and all materials.  \nSingle rooms: $395 Shared room: $345 \nRegister here: \nhttps://tinyurl.com/RHfall2025 \n

SUMMARY:Living the Tension - Holding Opposites Together in Love
DESCRIPTION:Living the Tension – Holding Opposites Together in Love\nFebruary 26 on Zoom\n1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST\n  \nWe navigate our external lives around multiple opposites; for example\, early/late\, inside/outside\, fast/slow. In our inner life we tend to hold opposites within a space that considers their significance or impact on our lives; for example\, freedom/constraint\, silence/sound\, enigma/answer. \nThe tension inherent in opposites can be creative or destructive. Hence\, inside tension there is innate power. Only a non-dual mind can reconcile the tension creatively. Race\, politics\, culture and religion are breeding grounds for opposition to become explosive.Therefore\, within the context of our polarized country\, we will ponder these questions: \n  \n  \nHow are we to hold the innate power of tension? \nWhat are the consequences if we choose to hold the tension in love? \nHow might we be agents for transforming polarization into reconciliation? \nJoin us as we rest and wonder in the presence of Spirit and spiritual guide Phil Cover. This 2-hour retreat will offer time to listen to Phil’ wisdom\, be lead by his questions and share in silence and conversation with others. \nA Zoom link will be sent to all registrants before the start of the retreat. \nThis event has been funded by a generous donor. Registration is required for planning purposes. Register HERE.

SUMMARY:Being the Beloved: A Winter Weekend Women’s Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Being the Beloved: A Winter Weekend Women’s Retreat\nFriday\, February 21  –  Sunday\, February 23\, 2025\nHosted by The Retreat House\nAt the Foehliage Retreat Center in Galena\, MD\nGuided by Linda Mastro\n  \nJesus said\, “Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.  \nThis is the most important\, the first on the list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s law and the Prophets hangs from them.”  \nMatthew 22:34-40 (The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language) \n  \nPraying with the greatest commandments\, we often focus on the love of God and neighbor. Despite our best intentions\, we can easily overlook that Jesus included us in this equation of love. Loving ourselves requires that we remember that we are the beloved children of God. We may have been programmed to judge ourselves harshly and to downplay our worth. These standards\, designed to keep us humble\, also undermine accepting our divine goodness. How on earth can we truly extend love to others if we do not stand on a firm foundation of love for ourselves? \nIn his classic book\, Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World\, Henri Nouwen\, Catholic priest\, professor\, psychologist\, and prolific writer\, says\, “As long as ‘being the Beloved’ is little more than a beautiful thought or a lofty idea that hangs above my life to keep me from becoming depressed\, nothing really changes. What is required is to become the Beloved in the commonplaces of my daily existence\, and bit by bit to close the gap that exists between what I know myself to be and the countless realities of everyday life. Becoming the Beloved is pulling the truth revealed to me from above down into the ordinariness of what I am thinking of\, talking about\, and doing from hour to hour.” \nIn this retreat\, we will explore what it means to embrace our Belovedness. Together we will reconsider self-care as an act of love that can transform our relationships in all domains of life. The retreat will include time for silent rest and reflection\, heart-enriching conversation\, and mindful prayer and movement. You will take home practices that will inspire you to live each day more fully into your one\, precious life. \nThe retreat begins with dinner on Friday evening and ends with a prayer service and brunch on Sunday. The cost of the retreat includes five nutritious meals\, lodging\, and all materials. \n  \nRegister here: https://tinyurl.com/WINTERBELOVED \n

The Gospel of Thomas today is considered by many to be a rich resource for the deepening of a person’s relationship with God and Yeshua. Listening prayerfully to the sayings offers us an experience of Jesus as a wisdom teacher. The Gospel is different from the canonical Gospels of Matthew\, Mark\, Luke and John as Thomas does not offer any type of narrative about the life of Jesus. Instead it contains one hundred and fourteen sayings of Jesus or Yeshua.  Each saying stands alone and offers a great deal of wisdom into the sayings of Jesus and is an invitation to the student of Thomas to go deeper into what is being said.

SUMMARY:Finding Hope in the Journey of Dementia\, with Dorothy Linthicum
DESCRIPTION:St. Anne’s Parish House Library\nAnnapolis\, Maryland \nThursday\, April 18: 10:30 a.m. – noon\, Tea and Conversation\n  \n  \nWe gratefully offer this conversation in collaboration with St. Anne’s\, Annapolis. Join us with Dorothy Linthicum and explore notions of prevention\, the basics of a diagnosis\, and the hope found in possibilities. Whether you are a family or community member\, a caregiver\, or a pastoral leader\, this topic is universally vulnerable. How can we help one another face the diagnosis of dementia in our families\, among friends\, or in ourselves? \nBrené Brown writes: “Vulnerability is the birthplace of love\, belonging\, joy\, courage\, empathy\, and creativity. It is the source of hope\, empathy\, accountability\, and authenticity.” Let us be reminded of the power of vulnerability\, not to be avoided\, but embraced\, and in embracing taking a first step toward easing our fears. \nWe will explore how the self is never destroyed despite the severity of a disease or condition\, an understanding that comes from many fields\, including psychology\, neurology\, psychiatry\, philosophy\, and spirituality\, among others. Dorothy is co-author\, along with Janice Hicks\, of Redeeming Dementia: Spirituality\, Theology\, and Science. Bring all of your questions\, whether you are family members seeking to learn more\, caretakers exploring practices\, or pastoral leaders meeting community members where they are in their journey. \nPlease register here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/t5usxtz\n\nVisit our website calendar for information on three other locations:\nChestertown\, Maryland – Tuesday\, April 16: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, Lunch and Conversation\, Emmanuel Church\, ($35) \nChestertown\, Maryland – Tuesday\, April 16: 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. (free)\, Tea and Conversation\, Upper Shore Aging: Amy Lynn Ferris Adult Activity Center \nOxford\, Maryland – Wednesday\, April 17: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, Lunch and Conversation\, Church of the Holy Trinity ($35)

DESCRIPTION:Church of the Holy Trinity\nOxford\, Maryland \nWednesday\, April 17: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, Lunch and Conversation\n  \n  \n  \nWe gratefully offer this conversation in collaboration with Church of the Holy Trinity\, Oxford. \nJoin us with Dorothy Linthicum and explore notions of prevention\, the basics of a diagnosis\, and the hope found in possibilities. \nPlease arrive by 11:30 so that we may begin our presentation and conversation at 12 noon.\nRegister here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/4t85mkf\n\nVisit our website calendar for information on three other locations:\nChestertown\, Maryland – Tuesday\, April 16: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, Lunch and Conversation\, Emmanuel Church\, ($35)\nChestertown\, Maryland – Tuesday\, April 16\, : 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. (free)\, Tea and Conversation\, Upper Shore Aging: Amy Lynn Ferris Adult Activity Center\nAnnapolis\, Maryland – Thursday\, April 18\, : 10:30 a.m. – noon\, Tea and Conversation\, St. Anne’s Parish House Library ($25)

SUMMARY:Women's Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Christmas\nJanuary 6\, 2024\n9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nheld at\nThe Foehliage\, Galena\, Maryland\n  \n  \nGive yourself this special time to refresh your spirit and rest in the company of other women. We’ll sink into this restorative day as a celebration of Celtic Women’s Christmas\, a tradition shared on January 6 at the Feast of Epiphany. Grounded by the work of poet and pastor Jan Richardson\, it is the tradition of honoring the often difficult and tiring work of women to maintain the hearth and home\, especially during the extended holiday season. The women gather to reimagine their lives and\, as friends\, discern emerging patterns and support\, as sisters\, the art of navigating and developing new paths for the new year. The interactive day will be filled with activity\, prayerful silence\, and creativity\, including creating a soul collage. Come enjoy a continental breakfast and a simple\, warm\, and seasonal lunch\, perhaps eaten around a blazing fire and catching a glimpse of an eagle flying.  \nMeg Gallagher and Suzi Foehl have led this retreat since 2020. They joyfully welcome anyone with curiosity\, intention\, and an open heart. The price for the day-long retreat\, including a simple breakfast and lunch is $55 per person. The 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. retreat will be held at the Foehliage in Galena\, MD.   \nAn overnight option is available at a reduced cost of an additional $50. A simple supper is included. The overnight option is $105.  Please register here: https://tinyurl.com/RH2023Women \n  \n“I do not know \nHow to keep it all together \nOr by what patterns this world might  \nFinally\, hold. \n  \n…And what shines \nThrough all this darkness \nShines through us\, \nSetting every shattered thing \nInto a new constellation \n  \nAnd we can turn  \nOur faces \nTo that light\, \nTo the grace of  \nThose stars \nThat turn in us.” \nJan Richardson.  From “Those Stars That Turn in Us\, A Blessing for Women’s Christmas”. sanctuaryofwomen.com. \n

SUMMARY:Women's Weekend Retreat - Blessing the Ordinary
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Weekend Retreat \nBlessing the Ordinary\n\n“What is a blessing? A blessing is a circle of light drawn around a person to protect\, heal\, and strengthen. Life is a constant flow of emergence. The beauty of blessing is its belief that it can affect what unfolds.”  \nJohn O’Donohue\, To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings. \n  \n  \nIn the fall\, the rhythm of life picks up pace. We prepare for a new school year and plan for Thanksgiving\, Advent\, Christmas\, and the dawn of a New Year. This retreat is an opportunity to remember that every day is holy and that\, when we pay attention\, we can be blessed by the ordinary of our relationships\, environments\, and work. Blessing is a form of prayer that draws our attention to the people\, places\, and activities that open our hearts\, bring us joy\, and connect us to what often goes unnoticed. We will use scripture and poetry as models for how to receive and give blessings\, a prayer process that can set the tone for the upcoming holy seasons. Activities will include group discussion\, silent time for reflection\, practicing the art form of blessings through writing\, music and movement. Individual rooms are available at $395; limited shared rooms are available at $345.  \nThis event is full at this time. SUMMARY:Being Disciples in this Time
DESCRIPTION:Being Disciples in this Time \na wisdom circle with stories and practices for the journey \nwith Bishop Porter Taylor and Debra Donnelly-Barton \nThree Sundays on Zoom \nApril 23\, 30 and May 7   \n5:00 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. EST \n\nGather with us for a time of learning and growing in conversation\, with spiritual practices to guide our weeks in between. Porter will guide us as we delve into Rowan Williams’ work\, each person bringing their own story. In-between sessions\, we will receive spiritual practice prompts to guide our attention on the journey. \nIn his book Being Disciples\, Rowan Williams asserts\, “discipleship is a state of being. Discipleship is about how we live; not just the decisions we make\, not just the things we believe\, but a state of being.” By that he means disciples ask themselves:  “What is Jesus Christ giving me here and now?” We rethink who we are and why we are here. Moreover\, it means we are called and empowered to live out our Baptismal Promises\, like “To seek and serve all persons\, loving your neighbor as yourself” and what that might look like “with God’s help.” Over the three weeks\, we will cover these topics\, each of which is a chapter in the book: Faith\, Hope and Love; Forgiveness; and\,  Holiness. At the book’s end\, William writes: “What keeps us going as disciples? Self-awareness and stillness\, growth and joy.” The point is about “offering to God our longing to be with Jesus\, wherever he may lead.” The goal here is to rediscover the fundamentals of being a Christian in this place and in this time.  Not only is it important for us to understand these virtues\, but to discover how we can live them out.  \nDiscipleship is also tuning our hearts to the song that God is singing within us right now.  That means practice–like a musician practices scales until they are both a tone memory and a muscle memory–we engage in prayer practices. Debra will offer us two practices per week that correspond to the reading for each week. We will let our learning sink into our hearts and our bodies as we practice what it means to live as a disciple.  \nREGISTER HERE:  https://tinyurl.com/BEINGdisciples. A suggested donation of $75 will be gratefully accepted. Please don’t let finances keep you from attending! For more information\, or\, to request a scholarship\, please email heather@retreathousehillsboro.org Being Disciples: Essentials of the Christian Life\, by Rowan Williams is encouraged for this series and can be purchased here.  \nPORTER TAYLOR is the author of a memoir— Are You Persuaded? In and Out of Being a Bishop. Bishop Taylor joined the Diocese of Virginia as Assisting Bishop after retiring as the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina in 2016. In retirement\, he also served on the faculty of Wake Forest University Divinity School. He holds a Master of Divinity\, a Ph. D. in Theology and Literature\, and a B.A. and M. A. in English. Porter and his wife Jo\, an artist\, are based in Asheville\, NC. \nDEBRA DONNELLY-BARTON is a graduate of the Stillpoint School for Spiritual Direction and the General Seminary in New York. As a practicing spiritual director\, she has an MA in theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University. Debra has studied the Ignatian spiritual exercises as well as engaged in an intensive training in centering prayer with Thomas Keating.

We will practice covid-safe protocols and ask that participants be fully vaccinated; masks are optional.  A suggested donation of $25 per person will be gratefully accepted to support our practice of welcoming all\, not letting finances keep anyone from attending.  \nABOUT THE RETREAT LEADER: Heather Strang is a graduate of the Shalem Institute Spiritual Guidance Program (https://shalem.org)\, a contemplative small group facilitator and member of the Retreat House staff. Heather is active in the healing prayer ministry with St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. She is the parent of two young men and resides with her husband in Annapolis\, Maryland.
