SUMMARY:Receive an Image
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nReceive an Image\nApril 13 – May 4\nMonday Evenings\n6:30 – 7:45 pm ET\nvia Zoom\n  \nwith Heather Hall\n  \nVisio divina (sacred seeing) is the practice of viewing the world with the eyes of our heart. Like the ancient practice of lectio divina (sacred hearing)\, which listens to a text with the ears of our heart\, this modern adaptation – using a simple camera to attune our perception – helps us deepen our connection to the Divine. \nIn her classic book – Eyes of the Heart: Photography as a Christian Contemplative Practice – Christine Valters Paintner reframes the traditional language of photography. Rather than “taking” or “shooting” photos\, we will practice “receiving” images as gifts. To “take” a photo is a strategic act of analysis; whereas\, to “receive” a photo with the heart is an encounter with the sacred. \nThrough this program\, you are encouraged to bring a camera on a walk so you can be fully present to receive an image. As you release expectation and judgment – from both within and beyond yourself – you’ll learn to watch for what shimmers and stirs within. Attune yourself with a new perspective and discover the invitation. Then explore the unique messages you receive. \nPlease note that this is not a “photography class.” Neither experience nor creativity are needed. No fancy camera needed\, either. In fact\, your cell phone is more than adequate for our purposes. And you need journey no further than your yard\, though we anticipate spring flowers may bring draw you out a little further. 😉 \nYour leader for this journey is Heather Hall\, who makes a habit of journeying with her camera and Divine wisdom. \nThough not required\, it’s recommended that you get a copy of Christine Valters Painter’s Eyes of the Heart: Photography as a Christian Contemplative Practice. You can purchase it at your favorite bookseller or through The Retreat House’s Bookshop at: Eyes of the Heart  \nREGISTER HERE: \n———————————————— \n\nPayment instructions:\nPlease do no let finances get in the way of gathering with us! We welcome you to pay as you will. Also\, if you would like to donate an additional amount to support others\, we are so grateful.  \nWe prefer ONLINE payments: please visit this link just below\, make a one-time donation\, and write “Receive An Image” in the notes box.\nCUT AND PASTE INTO YOUR BROWSER: \nhttps://midshore.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=3409 \nIf CHECKS are your preferred payment\, please mark the memo line with ‘Receive and Image’ and mail them to: \nThe Retreat House \nP.O. Box \nChestertown\, MD   21620

SUMMARY:Gospel of Thomas - the mystical sayings of Jesus
DESCRIPTION:  \nGospel of Thomas\n\n\nTuesdays \nSeptember 9 – November 18 and December 2 – 16\n\n3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.\nOn Zoom\n\n  \n  \nGather together as we explore and listen to the Gospel of Thomas. Each week we will prayerfully listen to one of Jesus’ sayings from this ancient source and take time to reflect upon what rises for each of us.\n\n\nWe ask for a suggested donation of $85. All of our programs are supported by donations. Whether you pay less\, or more to support another\, we are grateful. Please never let finances keep you from gathering. A Zoom link will be emailed before the start this circle.\nPlease register HERE.\n  \nMore about The Gospel of Thomas: \nThe Gospel of Thomas is one of the 52 texts discovered at Nag Hamadi in 1945 and represents some of the earliest Christian teachings. Many of the Nag Hamadi codices were initially classified as Gnostic\, a category that placed them outside of mainstream Christian thinking. \nIt is highly likely that The Gospel of Thomas was written before the four New Testament gospels. Stevan L. Davies\, Ph.D. is an influential author of 18 scholarly books and Professor of Religious Studies. He argues that the apparent independence of the ordering of sayings in Thomas from that of their parallels in the first three Gospels shows that Thomas was not evidently reliant upon the canonical gospels and probably predated them. \nThe Gospel of Thomas is very different in tone and structure from the four canonical Gospels. Unlike the Gospels in our Bibles\, it is not a narrative account of the life of Jesus; instead\, it consists of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus. \nScholars regard the Gospel of Thomas as one of the most important texts in understanding early Christianity outside the New Testament. A central theme of the Gospel of Thomas is that salvation comes through a mystical understanding and experience of the words of Jesus rather than through doctrines to believe in or sacraments to do.
