Writing our Story

Three Wednesday Evenings

January 17, 24 and February 7

6:00 p.m.  –  7:30 p.m. EST

In one of E. M. Forester’s novels a character says “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”  That is, as we talk, we become more deeply aware of our thoughts and emotions.  By speaking, we gain a new perspective as well as an accountability to our listeners. No one has to be an accomplished writer to write down their thoughts because the purpose is less about creating a beautiful document and more about getting some of our history in front of us.

This wisdom circle will invite participants to write about a significant episode of their own history. The intentions are both to become more aware of the key moments of our lives, but also to become aware of the commonality of what it is to be human. We all have to find a purpose and a community and beliefs and our gifts. The aim is to discover how the Holy Spirit works in our lives and to realize that the life journey we all travel is filled with highs and lows, yet we are still walking in the The Way Jesus taught us.

We will focus on several readings and selected prompts, such as: what was your greatest love; what has been the accomplishment you are most proud of; when have you had to ask for forgiveness; what would you most like to do if everything were possible; what was the hardest period of your life; when do you feel happiest; if you could change one thing in your life, what would it be; or, if you could meet one person regardless of date or place, who would it be.

PORTER TAYLOR is the author of his memoir: Are YouPersuaded? In and Out of being a Bishop and two other books: To Dream as God Dreams and From Anger to Zion.  Bishop Taylor joined the Diocese of Virginia as Assisting Bishop after retiring as the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina in 2016. In retirement, he also served on the faculty of Wake Forest University Divinity School. He holds a Master of Divinity, a Ph. D. in Theology and Literature, and a B.A. and M. A. in English. Porter and his wife Jo, an artist, are based in Asheville, NC.
